ICC confirms World Cup slashed to 10 teams

The International Cricket Council has confirmed a controversial decision to slash the 2015 and 2019 World Cups to just 10 teams, despite widespread objections.

The world governing body endorsed the move at an executive board meeting in Mumbai.

"The executive board confirmed their decision made in October 2010 that the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 in Australia and New Zealand and the ICC Cricket World Cup in England in 2019 will be a 10-team event," a media release said.

The move comes despite support from prominent figures for "minnow" nations such as Ireland, Kenya, Canada and the Netherlands, all of whom took part in the 2011 edition.

Ireland pulled off one of the shocks of the just-concluded tournament jointly hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka when they came from behind to beat England by three wickets in a thrilling group stage clash.

"I really enjoy seeing the minnow teams getting an opportunity to be honest," Australia captain Michael Clarke said on Monday, echoing earlier comments by England spinner Graeme Swann.

"Why would you want to take the world out of the World Cup? Shocks can happen," Swann told Wisden Cricket magazine.

Cricket Ireland set up a Facebook campaign against the decision, which the body's chief executive Warren Deutrom called "frankly outrageous".

"I cannot think of a decision which is less cognisant of the principles of sport and fair play than the one that has been taken today," he said, in comments posted on the Irish Times website.

"It absolutely flies in the face of all the evidence that has been possible to accrue over the last four years as regards Ireland's performances, not just in the World Cup in 2007 but also in this World Cup and the intervening four years."

The decision means the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will be contested by full ICC members: India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, England, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

The 2019 edition in England will also include 10 teams, but there will be a qualifying process.

The latest World Cup had been criticised for its length, after it stretched over six weeks from February 19 to April 2.

Cricket World Cup 2011 won by India

India won the Cricket World Cup again after 28 years. A brilliant effort by Gambhir and the skipper MS Dhoni lead India to victory.
Jayawardene's 103 wasn't just enough to bag the game for Sri Lanka. The last over of Malinga wasn't impressive at all. Dhoni took full advantage of the loose balls and entertained the crowd.
Congratulations to India!!! They displayed a great deal of cricket and deserved to win the World Cup.

I just read a blog at "The News" and am astonished to read the views of the writer. Have a look and see for yourself;


what kind of lame thinking is this? 
The writer is happy that we lost  and has thanked God for it........... are you wondering why??? Lets see his pathetic arguments:
Because if we had won, we would all be calling each other and sending sms messages to congratulate each other, which would result in higher phone bills.
Because if we had won there would have been celebrations on the road which would have resulted in traffic jams.
Because if we had won, there would have been aerial firing.
Because if we had won, we would be sitting in front of tv on Saturday to watch the match.
Because somehow, in the words of the writer and I quote "These happy-go-lucky days have made us forget all our worries".
and I quote again "I just don't know why we ever wanted to win the match so dearly. Infact we will inflict real pain to our neighbour-cum-rival by making them waste their energies for one more day and losing out monetarily, physically and psychologically. Green shirts have indeed turned out to be a winner in the end."
and again "Anyways, why create a fuss over the loss? After all cricket is not our national sport."
Now I am thinking, shall I say something about all the above arguments or shall I request my readers to give the cross-arguments. 
I would just want to comment on the aerial firing issue. Its true that there is a culture of aerial firing and that this happens but do you think that loosing a match is the right way to avoid aerial firing? Can we not take some other course of action to avoid or at least minimise it?
I want all my readers to share their thoughts regarding the arguments given by the visionary correspondent of GEO, Mr. Haris Tohid.

How to lose a cricket semi final...

It is a sad and disappointing morning for Pakistani nation because of what we witnessed yesterday. I have no words to explain it. I want to pick up the DANDA that our government school's master ji has and start beating those players who ruined it for us.
What will you do when your key bowler starts to fumble from the very beginning and then catches are dropped as well. Not one, not two, but six catches were dropped expertly. Four of those were of Sachin... Can you believe it!!! He was dropped for the first time when he was on 27. then again and again and again... Aagggggrrrrrrrrr....

The only bowler who looked determined, was Wahab Riaz, who bowled beautifully and took 5 wickets. This allowed us to restrict Indian cricket team to 260 run.
But in a game of cricket, the batting side also has to perform but Paksitani batsmen were not up for it. Our batting line was shattered very early by idiotic shot selection of our players. Younis Khan and Misbah slaughtered the pace of the game by pathetic shots choice and  played the role of undertakers to bury Pakistan's dreams of winning the game. Their slow paced game put pressure on the other side of the wicket which resulted in the dismissal of Asad Shafiq and Umer Akmal.
Overall the Pakitani cricket team did not performed at all and it never looked like they were playing to win the match. 
I am not moaning about loosing the match. I know that in a game one side will win and the other will loose but when you loose even after giving it your best and after performing well then it is acceptable. But if you loose in such a shameful manner then there are no excuses for it.   
My advice to all the players in our cricket team is to stop playing cricket and start writing book with the title "HOW TO LOSE A CRICKET SEMI FINAL" and yes, I can predict that it will be a best seller.

6th Match, Group A: Kenya v Pakistan at Hambantota (Feb 23, 2011) - Pakistan won by 205 runs

Pakistan won their first match of World Cup 2011 against Kenya. Pakistan's opening batsmen couldn't give the expected start to their team. In 5th over, Mohammad Hafeez at 9, tried to put Otieno's ball in the gap but Waters went screaming to his left horizontally and took the catch after a brilliant effort. Umpteen replays confirmed it was a clean. Kamran Akmal replaced him. In the very next over Shehzad after playing 18 balls and scoring only 1 run, was shown way to the pavilion by Odoyo when he tried to go midwicket, ended up going in the air straight to mid off as he got the leading edge. Kenyan skipper took an easy catch. 
Kamran Akmal and Younis Khan played brilliantly. Kamran scored 55 of 67 balls and gave Pakistan the start they needed. Younis Khan also added 50 runs to the score board. 
Misbah got off the mark by a brilliant six, first of the match. Misbah scored 65 off 69 balls with the help of one four and two sixes, while Umar hit 71 off 52 balls, including eight fours and a six as they put up 118 runs for fifth wicket. 
Shahid Afridi managed to score only 7 runs. Pakistan put a total of 317 runs. Kenyans conceded 46 extras with 37 wides.
Kenyan batsmen couldn't put pressure on Pakistani bowlers. Omer Akmal's brilliant fielding and throw sent Waters back to the pavilion. Umar Gul bowled to Ouma which when straight to Kamran Akmal, an easy catch. Afridi completely destroyed Kenyan batting line and grabbed 5 wickets in 8 overs. He bowled 3 maiden overs and gave away only 16 runs. Umar Gul and Hafeez took 2 and 1 wicket each. Shoaib Akhtar could not take any wicket but bowled decent overs. Obuya was the only Kenyan batsman who could score some runs. Afridi got rid of him after 47 runs.
 Kenyan team was all out on 112. Pakistani bowlers gave away 11 extras.
Pakistan won by 205 runs. Umer Akmal was Man of the Match for his brilliant batting and great performance on the field. 
In the end it was a comfortable win for Pakistan. But Pakistan really needs to work on opening batsmen. Pakistan's next match is against Sri Lanka on 10th March. I am hoping Pakistani squad will deliver same results again.

World Cup 2011 - Pakistan vs Kenya

So on February 23rd, Pakistani cricket team will be facing Kenya in their first match of World Cup 2011. 
In Pakistani squad we have Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmad Shahzad, Kamran Akmal (wk), Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi (capt), Abdur Razzaq, Umar Gul, Wahab Riaz and Shoaib Akhtar. 
Kenya will be fighting with Seren Waters, Alex Obanda, Collins Obuya, Rakep Patel, Steve Tikolo, Maurice Ouma (wk), Jimmy Kamande (capt), Thomas Odoyo, James Ngoche, Shem Ngoche, Nehemiah Odhiambo. This is the probable teams of both sides. 
Now if we look at the last five completed games by both sides, Pakistan has a LWWWL scorecard and Kenya has the history of LWLWL. 
As for both the teams, they will be facing each others for the 6th time. Pakistan has won all the matches till now and as a Pakistani I am hoping that our team will do the same again. Only once Kenya scored past 150 against Pakistan. Again I am hoping Pakistani bowlers will restrict Kenyan batsmen to an easy chase able score. 
In Pakistani team we will be expecting good performance from Ahmad Shahzad, Misbah and would definitely want some spectacular batting from Afridi. On bowling side Shoaib Akhtar will have to perform good as there are concerns over his form. i expect Afridi to use Akhtar with clever strategy so he does not get exhausted and could be used for mid spells if needed. 
Pakistani team needs to find wickets from start of the game, as we have seen in last two matches of this World Cup that even teams like Netherlands and Zimbabwe can give tough time to teams like England and Australia.
I hope Afridi does a good job and he puts an end to the concerns over his captaincy debate. 
I wish best of luck to Pakistani team and am looking forward to it. I will discuss the results after the game. 
GO FOR IT PAKISTAN!!!
